Beat News - New Beat Project programme in Surrey

The Beat project will work with Epsom & Ewell Borough Council (EEBC) to engage marginalised young people through creative activities (e.g. music and arts) designed to maintain access to employment, education and training; to tackle health and well-being and behavioural issues, to address FTE’s and to encourage active involvement in the wider community.

The project will target young people identified through RONI (specifically those with a school attendance less than 80%), school exclusions, those engaged in anti-social behaviour, and those with a statement of SEN or on a school action plan.
Young people will be involved for the duration of the project, including its set-up, marketing, administration, management and on-going development. Participants will construct a website to showcase the project and to provide further educational links and information. This will include a Youth Forum.
The courses and projects will progress from a 2 hour taster through to a standard 10 week accredited course and on-going engagement through focus groups and mentoring.
The EEBC mentoring scheme will be enhanced to offer group mentoring and increased targeted support. All participants will have their own programme and workbook to share ideas, inspiration, information, support and knowledge. The mentoring scheme will start with an individual assessment meeting to identify the mentee’s aspirations and establish a work programme. This will also measure the distance travelled. There will be on-going evaluations to monitor outcomes over the duration of the project.
